Elogium Behind the Scenes

TREKCORE > VOY > EPISODES > ELOGIUM > Behind the Scenes

The co-writer of Elogium, Jimmy Diggs, named this character Samantha Wildman, after a girl who lived in Florida and who died at the age of 7. Her parents donated her kidneys for transplant and thus saved Digg's wife Linnette. When Diggs learned that the girl had loved animals, he made the character a xenobiologist.
Tim Russ: "This episode dealt with puberty and that reflects a nice range in stories. I'd like to see more challenges to our concepts and ideas and attitudes and traditions, as they've done with a couple of shows. 'Emanations' was one of them, the other is 'Elogium.' All this stuff is dealing with things that people go through and that is the essence of what Roddenberry was putting together in having the science fiction of this show capture or deal with questioning our values and our concepts and what our traditions should be. That, I think, is the most important part of Star Trek."
