Prototype Behind the Scenes

TREKCORE > VOY > EPISODES > PROTOTYPE > Behind the Scenes

Rick Worthy played a Cravic automated personnel unit. He also plays Noah Lessing of USS Equinox in "Equinox". He also appears as Koman in DS9: "Soldiers of the Empire" (1997) and as Elloran Officer #1 in the 1998 film Star Trek IX: Insurrection.
The masks and costumes of the Pralor and Cravic are the same but different colours (silver and gold respectively) - this has symbolic meaning for plot reasons as well as being economical for the show's production. The robot costumes were manufactured out of separate vacu-formed components which were fitted over the actors to allow them full movement and flexibility.
Asimov was a friend of Gene Roddenberry and was a science consultant for Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Asimov's robot novels are sci-fi classics and, like some Star Trek fiction, foreshadowed and probably influenced real-life future developments. Asimov's robots are 'intelligent' because they have a "positronic brain". It is likely that Asimov gave his blessing to the use of the term "positronic" in TNG and hence, after thereby establishing it in Star Trek canon, to later Star Trek such as "Prototype".
