Hatil suffered a debilitating accident and, in 2371, chose to undergo the Vhnori transference ritual since he had become a burden on his family. After hearing Harry Kim's reports about the dimension his people call the "Next Emanation," Hatil began to have doubts about his beliefs concerning the afterlife. Hatil decided not to undergo the ritual, but instead fled to live in the Cararian Mountains with friends.

Wife of Hatil Garan, both inhabitants of the Vhnori homeworld. Araya wanted her husband Hatil to undergo the Vhnori transference ritual in 2371. She felt his choice to die was a selfless gift to his family. She was angry at Harry Kim for "spreading lies" about the Next Emanation and causing her husband to question a lifetime of beliefs.
