Persistence of Vision Behind the Scenes

TREKCORE > VOY > EPISODES > PERSISTENCE OF VISION > Behind the Scenes

The holocharacter Mrs. Templeton is played by Carolyn Seymour, who was born in the UK. She plays Commander Toreth in TNG: Face of the Enemy.
In Janeway's gothic holonovel Lindsey Haun plays the holodeck character Beatrice Burleigh ("Cathexis", "Learning Curve", "Persistence of Vision"). In "Real Life" she plays Belle, the daughter of the Doctor in his family holoprogram Beta-Rho.
Stan Ivar reprises the role of Mark, Janeway's fiancé, from "Caretaker, Part One". Strictly speaking, in this episode he plays the Bothan disguised as Mark.
James L. Conway directed "The 37's", "Persistence Of Vision", "Death Wish" and "Innocence". He also directed "Broken Bow", the Enterprise series premiere.
The gothic-style window is re-used for the two later episodes featuring the holosimulation of Leonardo da Vinci's workshop in "Scorpion, Part One" and "Concerning Flight".
In "Persistence Of Vision" Janeway is "reunited" with a man she thinks is her boyfriend, Mark. Originally Jeri Taylor had hoped to make Mark her (Janeway's) husband. "It was just something I really felt strongly about and I argued to have them absolutely married. They certainly are a couple that's devoted to each other. It looks like marriage is a dying institution in the twenty-fourth century. It's not a good message. I don't like that. I think that we will struggle with what happens with Janeway, and she will struggle with exactly what she is to do. At the moment, she is determined they're going to get back quickly, and so we're going to go with that kind of inertia for a while. We are really letting the characters develop and seeing where they take us."
The gothic holonovel is first introduced in "Cathexis", and is also seen in "Learning Curve". Jeri Taylor, the story's writer: "It was a show that I had wanted to do since last year. I got a great deal of opposition from the studio, in both story and script form. They thought it was a very soft story and they just didn't get it. They want more fights and more aliens. They weren't high on this at all and didn't want it to appear as early in the year as it did. Then it got made and everybody loved it. Then we got all the phone calls that said, 'Wow, that turned out well.' I knew it was going to work. I may be wrong about this, but it was the first show of the season that got a little buzz coming from the audience."
