Ensign Samantha Wildman goes into
labor , which lasts at least seven hours. During the delivery,
the baby shifts position and her exo-crial ridges lodge in the
uterine wall. This is a rare complication, but has been known to
happen in Human-Katarian pregnancies. The uterine is too fragile and
he does not want to risk nerve damage. If they had not delivered
the baby immediately, her ridges could have perforated the
uterus and caused internal bleeding. To deliver the baby to
safety, they initiate a fetal transport. Wildman is surprise to
have a girl, as she was expecting a boy. The baby's incisors
will erupt in three to four weeks. Since Wildman does not
have the scales of a Ktarean, she and the Doctor will need to
discuss breast feeding options. On the original Voyager medical
systems were heavily damaged, and the osmotic pressure therapy
they used on the baby did not work, resulting in her death. Kim
brings the surviving baby with him when he crosses over. |
